A sleep apnoea device is a custom-made oral appliance worn at night. It holds the lower jaw slightly forward, which keeps the airway open and reduces snoring and the pauses in breathing of obstructive sleep apnoea. Snoring and broken sleep leave you tired by day and, in obstructive sleep apnoea, put strain on the heart. Because the appliance sits on the teeth, the teeth and gums must be healthy enough to carry it, which is why the device is provided as part of the general and family dentistry in London we offer. We take a medical history, examine the teeth and use dental x-rays where they are needed, keeping radiation exposure to a minimum, before Dr Sodeinde recommends a device.
An appliance that does not fit the jaw properly is uncomfortable and does not hold the airway open. We assess your bite and jaw before selecting a device, so you are not paying for one that will not work for you.

Patients who snore, patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, and patients who cannot tolerate CPAP. Snoring is a common reason people avoid raising the subject; we discuss it privately and without judgement. We examine your airway, jaw and teeth and decide whether a mandibular advancement device is appropriate. This is combined with one of our dental examinations so any dental problems are treated first.
We take impressions of both jaws and record how far forward the lower jaw can comfortably sit. The appliance is made to those records.
We fit the appliance, check it seats fully and adjust the forward setting. We show you how to wear it and how to clean it.
We review how you are sleeping and fine-tune the setting as you get used to it. Any other dental problem, such as a tooth needing dental abscess treatment, can be dealt with at the same visits.
We check the appliance and your jaw joints at your regular examinations, since the forward position places a small load on them.
Our clinical lead is Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071). The appliance rests on the teeth, so gum and tooth health are assessed by a periodontist before it is made.
The fee depends on the device. We confirm it at the consultation after assessing your jaw and teeth.
