Professional teeth cleaning removes the plaque and hardened tartar that a toothbrush cannot reach, which is the main cause of gum disease. We provide it at our Primrose Hill practice.
Our team is led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, a specialist periodontist, so gum health is checked at every cleaning visit.

Plaque that is not brushed away hardens into tartar within days. Tartar cannot be brushed off, it irritates the gums, and it gives decay a place to start. We use ultrasonic cleaning to remove it from above and below the gum line and then hand-scale the areas the ultrasonic tip cannot reach. This is part of the general and family dentistry in London we provide.
Each cleaning visit includes a gum check and advice on plaque control at home. Where we see weakened enamel, a fluoride application can help remineralise it, and dental sealants can protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth.
How often you need a professional clean, and how thorough it needs to be, depends on the depth of the pockets around your teeth and how quickly you build up tartar. We measure this at the assessment and set the interval from it, so you are not paying for a standard package.
If the assessment finds decay, we plan dental fillings alongside the cleaning. For some gum conditions we can use laser dentistry. You receive an itemised plan before any treatment starts.
Leave your number and we will call you back. Nothing is booked until you say so.
Anyone with tartar, bleeding gums or staining, and anyone who has not been to the dentist for some time. We see many patients who are embarrassed about the state of their teeth or who are moving from NHS to private care, and we focus on what your mouth needs now.
A clean is also the usual first step before restorative work such as dental crowns, because healthy gums make a better fit. Our page on general and family dentistry costs in London sets out what to expect.
If you are anxious, tell us when you book and we will plan the visit around it.
We remove the tartar from every tooth surface, including under the gum line. Where the build-up is heavy, it may take more than one visit, and we tell you that at the start.
We measure the pockets between your teeth and gums. This tells us how healthy the gums are and whether they can support restorations such as dental bridges if you need them later.
We polish the teeth to remove surface stains and leave the enamel smooth, which slows down new plaque.
We show you how to clean between the teeth and give you our general dentistry aftercare guide. Good home care lengthens the gap between professional visits.
We set the date of your next visit from your gum measurements rather than from a fixed schedule.
Cleaning at our practice is overseen by Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071). A periodontist treats gum disease, so patients whose measurements show early or advanced disease are treated in the same practice rather than referred elsewhere.

The fee depends on how much tartar there is and how many visits it takes. We give you a price after the assessment, which can be combined with one of our dental examinations.
A routine clean is a single short appointment. Heavy build-up may need a longer visit or a second one.
Some patients feel sensitivity, particularly where gums are inflamed. Tell us and we can numb the area. If your gums need more than a routine clean, we refer you within the practice for specialist gum disease treatment.
That depends on your home care. Most patients need a professional clean every few months to keep tartar under control, and we advise an interval for you.
We confirm whether you need a professional clean, and how often, at your first visit. You can see what happens at your new patient consultation and how to book.

A cleaning visit is often combined with an examination or x-rays to check for problems beneath the surface. Our costs page and aftercare guide will help you prepare, and our fillings page explains what happens if decay is found.
You will receive a written plan and an itemised quote from Dr Sodeinde, which is yours to keep and use at any other practice. Arrange your assessment with Dr Sodeinde to find out what your gums need. Payment particulars can be discussed with staff.
