A fluoride treatment is a concentrated varnish or gel applied to the teeth in the surgery. It helps enamel take up minerals lost to acid, which slows or reverses the earliest stage of decay. We decide at the consultation whether it would help you and how often.

The first sign of decay is not a hole but a chalky white patch where acid has drawn minerals out of the enamel, sometimes with sensitivity to cold. At that stage the damage can still be reversed. A fluoride application helps the enamel remineralise, and we provide it as part of the general and family dentistry in London we offer, to stop early decay before it needs a filling.
Not everyone needs professional fluoride. We recommend it from your examination findings, so you pay for it only where there is a reason, and the fee is set out in your itemised quote before treatment.
The examination also tells us whether you would benefit from dental sealants alongside fluoride, since the two protect different parts of the tooth.

Patients with early white-spot lesions, sensitive teeth, a dry mouth, a history of frequent cavities, or exposed root surfaces where the gum has receded. We examine the teeth for early decay and sensitivity and decide which fluoride product suits you. It is usually done at the same visit as professional teeth cleaning, because fluoride works best on clean enamel.
The teeth are dried and the varnish or gel is painted onto them. It takes a few minutes and involves no drilling or anaesthetic.
We ask you not to eat or drink for a short period afterwards, and to avoid brushing that evening, so the fluoride stays on the enamel.
How often you need it depends on your decay risk. We set an interval at the assessment and review it at each check-up.
Preventive care at the practice is overseen by Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071). Fluoride is one part of a preventive plan that also includes sealants, regular cleaning and check-ups; where decay has already formed a cavity, the tooth is restored with a filling instead.

Yes. Surgery products are far more concentrated than toothpaste and are applied to dried enamel, so more fluoride is taken up. Toothpaste remains essential every day between visits.
