We treat patients with the acute pain and swelling of a gum abscess. Many are embarrassed by the state of their mouth by the time they arrive; that is not something we judge. Prompt treatment matters, because the infection can spread and the bone loss is permanent.
Dr Ope Sodeinde, our GDC-registered specialist periodontist, establishes whether the abscess is an isolated event or a sign of wider disease. That may lead to gingivitis treatment for inflammation elsewhere, or peri-implantitis treatment if the infection is around an implant. Under local anaesthetic at our Primrose Hill practice, we open the pocket or make a small incision to release the pus and relieve the pressure, then irrigate the area.
Drainage treats the symptom. To stop it returning we remove what caused it, which may mean scaling and root planing to clear deep bacteria, or in some cases gum grafting for recession to protect the area.
Healing begins straight away. We give you instructions for keeping the site clean while the tissue repairs and the inflammation settles.
A maintenance programme with regular reviews is what stops the infection recurring and protects the supporting bone.
